SSL Configuration

Setup SSL for API's & RPC calls
The nexus core API, RPC, P2P and node communications can be secured with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS). This guide will help you to setup SSL for your Nexus node.
Nexus has provided security, for unauthorised API calls by incorporating API credentials and also whitelisting of IP address for making API calls.
We cannot add quantum resistance algorithms to API calls, as the internet only uses SSL/TLS encryption and will not work with post quantum algorithms. Even if we implement them it will break compatibility with existing systems.

What certificate formats and extensions does Nexus support?

Nexus supports the PEM format. PEM (Privacy Enhanced Mail) is the most common format for X.509 certificates, CSRs, and cryptographic keys. A PEM file is a text file containing one or more items in Base64 ASCII encoding, each with plain-text headers and footers (e.g. -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- and -----END CERTIFICATE-----). A single PEM file could contain an end-entity certificate, a private key, or multiple certificates forming a complete chain of trust.
PEM files are usually seen with the extensions .crt, .pem, .cer, and .key (for private keys), but you may also see them with different extensions like.ca-bundle.

SSL Files

When purchasing a valid SSL/TLS certificate it will consist of two or three files
  • certificate
  • privatekey
  • cabundle - optional
Most SSL vendors will provide the first two files, but some may not provide the cabundle. If you have not received, then you need to build the ca-bundle manually.

What does a PEM certificate look like?

A sample SSL/TLS certificate is shown below in PEM format:

Setup SSL for the Node:

Copy the SSL files provided by the CA authority to /home/<user>/certs.
For connecting to Bubble applications successfully, it is a prerequisite to include the cabundle.
To configure SSL, add the below options in the nexus.conf file and those should point to the location of the particular files. The "sslcabundle" is an optional configuration, but is a requirement for connecting to certain applications.
To open the config file, use the command below:
nano ~/.Nexus/nexus.conf
Add the below lines of code to the configuration file and save.
#SSL Configuration for Nexus nodes
#Enable SSL for API
apissl=1
#Enable SSL for RPC
rpcssl=1
sslcertificate=<pathtocertifcateandname>
sslcertificatekey=<pathtoprivatekeyandname>
sslcabundle=<pathtocabundleandname>
Use Ctrl+s & Ctrl+x to save and exit nano editor.
Restart the node for the changes to take effect.
Check if your node is using ssl.
